i'm currently a senior project director at Upturn, where i've worked for ten years. i lead the organization's cross-cutting research on AI and civil rights.

currently, i lead a major interdisciplinary research effort with collaborators at NYU, CMU, CDT, and Microsoft Research, researching how algorithmic systems used in civil rights contexts are assessed for discrimination in practice, how firms structure their search for less discriminatory alternatives, and how regulatory design structures these efforts. during the Biden-Harris administration, i led our policy engagement with the White House and federal agencies such as the CFPB and FTC. i also led a coalition of civil rights organizations working to shape federal actions and advance civil rights protections in AI policy. in the past i directed research and advocacy on the use of pretrial risk assessments, as well as law enforcement's use of mobile device forensic tools.

overall, my research examines the use of machine learning and technologies in social systems across the United States. in particular, i focus on how technology shapes key civil rights issues, in areas such as credit, employment, housing, and the courts. i frequently work with advocates and researchers across disciplines. my work has directly resulted in new regulatory efforts, major policy changes at large technology firms, and new policy priorities in civil society.

i graduated with honors from Northwestern University with degrees in history and political science.
